Project Background

During the production of coalbed methane horizontal wells, the client was unable to accurately grasp the actual production performance of each fractured interval, nor effectively identify the major gas-producing intervals, production properties (gas/water), and flow dynamics inside the wellbore. Meanwhile, the lack of in-depth understanding of the correlation between coal seam properties and productivity led to insufficient targeted fracturing and dewatering measures, which restricted the further release of productivity.

 

Our Solution

We adopted Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DAS/DTS) for production profile logging to monitor the gas flow dynamics and temperature field distribution in the wellbore in real time. This technology enables precise identification of contribution differences ranging from major production intervals to minor gas-producing intervals, as well as qualitative determination of the production properties (gas or water production) of each fractured interval. Combined with borehole trajectory analysis and coal seam property identification, high-efficiency production intervals such as block coal sections were pinpointed, providing a solid basis for fracturing design optimization and dewatering regime adjustment.

 

Final Results

  1. Identified fractured intervals No. 5, No. 8 and No. 10 as the major gas-producing intervals, with a cumulative contribution ratio of 46.81%;
  2. Achieved qualitative discrimination of the production status of each interval, clearly reflecting the gas and water production conditions;
  3. Revealed the correlation between production interval distribution and borehole trajectory, confirming that block coal sections are the primary contributors to gas production;
  4. Proposed targeted recommendations: prioritize fracturing operations on block coal sections and further enhance productivity through optimized dewatering practices.
