The power management module of the MWD (Measurement While Drilling) system is a dedicated power supply unit designed for extreme downhole environments. Its core mission is to provide continuous and stable power for sensors, circuits, and data transmission systems under the drilling conditions featuring high temperature, high pressure, and intense vibration.

MWD Power Management Modules: Lifeline of High-Temp Underground Mining

1. Main Technical Features

High Temperature and High Pressure Resistance: Special components and packaging processes are adopted to ensure stable operation at temperatures above 175°C and pressures exceeding 100MPa.

Multi-energy Compatibility: It is usually compatible with turbine generators, lithium battery packs or downhole thermoelectric generators, and can automatically switch power sources according to drilling conditions.

Intelligent Power Consumption Management: Dynamic frequency modulation and zonal power supply strategies are employed to switch among different modes such as data acquisition, transmission and dormancy, reducing the average system power consumption by 30%–50%.

Safety Redundancy Design: It is equipped with overvoltage/overcurrent protection and short-circuit isolation functions. Some high-end modules adopt a dual-power redundancy architecture to ensure continuous operation for more than 1000 hours.

2. Technical Challenges and Development

The current R&D focus lies in improving energy density and intelligence level. For example, silicon carbide (SiC) devices are used to reduce conversion losses, or AI algorithms are introduced to predict working conditions for optimizing power supply strategies. The future development trend will focus on the integration with wireless charging, energy harvesting and other technologies, so as to further improve the long-term operation effect and reliability of the MWD system.

3. Analysis of the Module Capable of Withstanding 200°C

The LH250011 MWD power management module is independently developed by Zhiteng Microelectronics and manufactured using MCM (Multi-Chip Module) technology. It serves as a secondary power supply for MWD instruments, converting the rectified and stabilized voltage from batteries or generators into the voltage required for powering accelerometers and acquisition main control circuits, and is equipped with dual-battery power supply switching function. The module can operate stably in the environment of -40℃~+200℃, featuring small size, high integration, high reliability and good vibration resistance.

Working Principle

The LH250011 series hybrid integrated circuit DC/DC switching power supply module adopts a high-frequency conversion mode, which inverts DC power into high-frequency power and then converts the high-frequency power into DC output through a rectifier circuit. The high-frequency conversion circuit achieves the goals of high conversion efficiency, small size and light weight.
